Irish 25 Strategy & Tips
Once you know how to play Twenty-Five, these strategies will help you win more games. From beginner tips to advanced tactics used by experienced players.
Beginner Tips
1. Learn the Card Order
The biggest mistake new players make is forgetting the unusual card rankings. Remember: 5 beats everything, and the Ace of Hearts is always trump.
2. Don't Waste Your Trumps
Trumps are precious. Don't play them early unless you're confident you'll win the trick. A single well-timed trump late in the hand can win you multiple tricks.
3. Watch What's Played
Pay attention to which high cards have been played. If the 5 and Jack of trumps are gone, your Ace of Hearts becomes much more powerful.
Intermediate Tips
Watch the First Trick Carefully
Players often start cautiously. Use the first trick to gather info: did anyone rob? What cards are people showing? This helps you plan the rest of your hand.
Lead Trump When You're Weak in Trumps
Got strong non-trump cards like a King or Queen? Lead a trump early to force others to use up their trumps. This gives your strong cards a better chance later.
Just be careful in team games—you don't want to strip your partner's trumps!
Keep a "Saver" Card
If you have a strong card like the Queen of diamonds, try to keep a weaker diamond too. Play the weak one first when diamonds are led—the first trick often gets trumped or contested heavily.
Save your Queen for later when there are fewer trumps and strong cards left.
Track Who's Out of Trumps
If someone plays a strong trump like the Queen on a trump lead, they're probably out of trumps. Remember this! You can safely play trumps into them later.
The better you track what people have (and don't have), the more tricks you'll win.
Advanced Tips
Fight for the Last Trick
The final trick is the easiest to win—most trumps are gone by then. Many players try to win the 4th trick just so they can lead their best card on the 5th.
Or surprise them with a reneged 5, Jack, or Ace of Hearts when they thought the last trick was theirs!
Lead a Suit That's Been Played
Example: Spades are trump. Someone leads K♥️ and you have Q♥️ and 3♠️. Trump the King with your 3♠️, then lead back with your Queen. Since hearts have already been pulled from players' hands, your Queen has a great chance.
This way you might win two tricks instead of one.
Watch What People Lead
When someone leads a weak card, they often have a stronger card in that suit waiting. If you see a weak spade led early, assume they're saving a strong spade for later—and keep one yourself if you can.
Take Low, Lead High
When you're last to play, win with the weakest card you can. Save your strong cards to lead with next—that's when they'll do the most damage.
Count Cards
Try to remember what's been played, especially trumps. If you know the 5 and Jack are gone, your Ace of Hearts just got a lot stronger.
This matters even more in larger games (8-10 players) where almost every card is in play.
